Is Gay & Grey only for gay men?

No! While many community organizations reserve the word ‘gay’ for gay men only, the word ‘gay’ has been used historically as an umbrella term. Within the community, it is often used in casual conversation across identities. Sometimes, especially among younger community members, the term ‘queer’ has been used in the same way, however because this word has been used as a slur, especially in older generations, we didn’t feel it was appropriate for our group.

We have started a women’s circle and hope to expand, as our capacities allow, to incorporate different subgroups where people of different identities can talk and support each other. We aim to be as inclusive as possible.

I don’t have grey hair. Can I be in the group?

As long as you meet the age requirement (50+), you’re welcome to become a member! Our group’s name is a bit cheeky because we want to have fun together. Whether your hair is grey or not, if you are an older part of the rainbow community, we welcome you with open arms!

Is Gay & Grey only for Montrealers?

Gay & Grey is based out of Montreal, but we have members far outside of the city. Even as far as New York! In addition to our local in-person activities, we also offer online programming that allows members to connect from any distance. Our goal is to break isolation for 2SLGBTQIA+ older adults. Isolation can exist anywhere.

Why should I become a member?

Community matters! Belonging to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community brings a distinct perspective to life compared to those who are heterosexual or cisgender. Being older is a different experience than being younger. It’s nice to be able to connect with other people who share some of the same memories and experiences that you have.you.

As a member of our group, you will receive our monthly newsletter and calendar of events, as well as weekly updates with links to community resources and events you may be interested in attending. You will also receive some Gay & Grey Montreal swag and a network of friendly people.

Becoming a member is also a great way to support the group! It takes a lot of work and money to coordinate events and advertise the group. We do our best to find funding from various sources, but the membership fees help to keep us up and running.

What if I can’t afford the membership fee?

We know that our community has higher rates of poverty than the general population. Please talk with us if you are in this situation. Lack of funds should never be the barrier to community.
